Carnegie Library Rathmines 1913 – Vintage Dublin Library

The Carnegie Library in Rathmines opened on 24?October?1913 after a generous grant from Scottish-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who funded libraries across the world to promote public learning and access to books. It was built in a neo-Georgian style on Lower Rathmines Road to replace earlier, smaller reading rooms and quickly became one of Ireland’s first open access public libraries, where visitors could freely browse shelves. Designed by the Dublin firm Batchelor & Hicks with notable features such as a stained-glass window and teak staircase, the library also pioneered a dedicated children’s section and hosted talks by prominent cultural figures. Over a century later it remains a vital community hub, blending historic charm with modern services.
