Martello Tower Sandymount 1950 – Historic Dublin Coast

The Martello Tower at Sandymount is one of a chain of defensive towers constructed along the Irish coast in the early 19th century, built between 1804 and 1806 as protection against a feared Napoleonic invasion. These round, thick-walled stone structures were designed to withstand cannon fire and provided strategic views across Dublin Bay. By 1950, the Sandymount tower was no longer in military use, standing instead as a prominent coastal landmark overlooking the strand, reflecting both Dublin’s defensive past and the changing role of its shoreline from fortification to recreation.
