The 1877 Threepence obverse obverse features the bust of young Queen Victoria facing left, with ribbons in her hair, and the surrounding legend: 'VICTORIA D:G: BRITANNIAR:REGINA F:D:'. The UK 1877 Threepence reverse shows the royal crown above the number '3', with the date divided to either side. A wreath with a bow at the base surrounds the main design.

Like the sixpence, the threepenny piece first appeared as a silver coin.
