The obverse (front) side of the coin depicts a young portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. The legend "ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA" is inscribed around the edge, which translates to "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen." The designer's initials, Mary Gillick, can be found under the portrait.
The reverse (back) side of the coin features the denomination "SIXPENCE" along with the year "1955." The reverse design has a crowned lion standing on its hind legs holding a shield. The lion represents the United Kingdom, and the shield displays the three lions passant of England, the lion rampant of Scotland, and the harp of Ireland.
