The 1831 Dime capped bust design was the work of former U.S. Mint chief engraver William Kneass. The 1831 Dime reverse features a bald eagle grasping three arrows to symbolize strength as well as an olive branch to symbolize peace. The bald eagle’s breast also features a U.S. shield with 6 horizontal lines and 13 vertical stripes. The US 1831 dime is a ten-cent coin (10¢), one tenth of a United States Dollar, labelled formally as one dime. The word dime comes from the Old French disme (now dîme) meaning tenth part.
